COURT: The defendant has pleaded guilty to one count of trafficking in a dangerous drug, contrary to section 4 of the Dangerous Drugs Ordinance and is committed to this court for sentence.
In the morning of 4 November 2023, the defendant arrived at the Hong Kong International Airport from South Africa. She was refused entry. Suspecting that drugs being concealed inside her body, she was escorted to hospital for examination. Altogether 100 pellets containing 782 grammes of cocaine were subsequently recovered from various parts of her body. Under caution, the defendant admitted that she was promised US$5,000 to bring drugs into Hong Kong.
The street value of those drugs was estimated to be near HK$1 million.
The defendant is now 35 and has three young children. She used to run a small shop in Zimbabwe, selling hair accessories and mobile phones. She has a clear record in Hong Kong.
Starting point for trafficking in 782 grammes of cocaine, based on quantity alone, would be one of 17 years and 1 month’s imprisonment.
In this case, the defendant acted as a courier in bringing drugs into Hong Kong. She travelled across countries and continents and ingested and/or inserted dangerous drugs into various parts of her body. The modus operandi was much more sophisticated than a simple courier delivering drugs in the streets of Hong Kong.
An additional 11 months would be added to reflect the overall criminalities. After a one-third reduction given for her earliest plea, the defendant is therefore sentenced to 12 years’ imprisonment.
